Completed a trial run for the duathlon over the correct distances today (2.7km run, 13km cycle, 2.7km run) and it went fairly well. I completed it in a time of 59 mins 2 seconds. At first I was disgusted at how bad the time was but when I sat down and worked it out, it wasn’t all that bad. I encountered a few obstacles that hopefully will not effect the actual race next Wednesday. For example:

Ran and Cycled into a horrible head wind (30 - 40 mph wind speed),

Wore a rain proof cycling jacket which acted as a sail when running and cycling and really slowed me down,

Waiting for traffic (big hold up!!),

75% of my training route is up-hill,

Biggest hold up of all was during the last part of the run, I felt a horrible crack in my lower right leg, on the inside of my shin bone. That pretty much slowed me down to a trot. I have been having  some trouble with both my lower legs over the last 5 weeks but thought I was over it…Aparantly not!! In the past I have had hairline fractures of both Tibia and I fear that this is the same thing.

My personal trainer, Robbie did suggest during our last meeting that I should taper my training this week easing off a little , but of course I didn’t take that advise and trained even harder as I felt good all week. Big Mistake and now I am paying the price!! Anyway, I have broken out the Magic Sponge and a couple of bags of Frozen Peas to bring the swelling down. I will complete the Duathlon next Wednesday (on hands and knees if I have to) with no excuses!! Still hugely looking forward to it and looking to beat a target of 55 minutes set by Robbie. I will not be running again until the actual event so the legs can recover a bit but it will give me more time to concentrate on my bike work.

Monday and Tuesday were heavy training days also. Monday morning I trained Biceps and Abs and that evening I did a 7mile run on the treadmill at 9mph with an incline of 5. Tuesday morning was Chest and Triceps with a 25km cycle in the evening. Wednesday morning (today) was Shoulders and Back followed by the trial Duathlon in the evening. Muscles and legs are a little bit sore at the moment but no tiredness.

My diet has been very clean since last Saturday apart from a little slip on Monday evening after the run (damn pizza!!). I am taking a lot of protien in and also a good amount of healthy fat as I am eating some class of fish every day. I am not eating any starchy carbs and almost all of my carbs are coming from green vegetables and porridge. I was eating a few rice cakes now and then but I have really gone off them at the moment - Way too bland!! Instead I have a Ryvita cracker bread or two ( Thanks for the intro to those Brian! :-) ) with some Tuna or something like that.

My next weigh in is on Friday and I hope to have lost over 11 pounds of Fat in total since the beginning of my challenge five and a half weeks ago. For now its feet up with my frozen peas…

See ya Friday,

Dave.
